Our Ancient Heritage
We are far older than modern science assumes and argues (against). Judaism and Christianity teach that mankind was uncivilized and had little awareness of its existence prior to the time of Abraham and Moses. According to the Christian Ryrie Study Bible, a well-known Bible study guide, humanity did not even exist before approximately 4000 B.C. As taught by Christian theology, ancient humanity was little more than ingrates worshipping rocks and trees, and little more than heathens until Judaism and Christianity came along. But as we sift our ancient past with the advancing sciences of archaeology, astronomy, mathematics and even cosmology, our perceptions based on race-consciousness and held beliefs begin to shift radically.
It seems that mankind has existed in a civilized manner for many thousands of years and may readily stretch back 50,000 years,4 and possibly a great deal further. Recent research is suggesting that our history may be far older than we presently understand.
There are ancient Egyptian references notating 26,000-year cycles and identifying periods of time well into antiquity. Herodotus, an illustrious Greek historian visiting Egypt in the 5th century B.C., reports in History, Book II, that Egyptian priests talked of times when the sun twice rose where it normally sets. With an understanding of the Spring Equinox as mapped by the Procession (thoroughly discussed later in this chapter), it takes approximately 13,000 years for the Sun to rise to its opposite backdrop constellation, which is one-half cycle. Herodotus reports Egyptian priests referenced dates “one and one-half cycles” ago or 39,000 years in the past.5 It is also reported by Plato in the 4th century B.C., that the Egyptians were observers of the skies (stars) for 10,000 years. This is 16,000 years ago in present time.
It has been recorded that the Egyptian moon god Thoth, rumored to have ruled Egypt for more than 3,226 years,6 is associated with introducing geometry, celestial mathematics, astrology, land-surveying, medicine, botany, magic, the alphabet and reading and writing, to name a few sciences, to the ancient Egyptians. Thoth, known as the wisdom god and much later as (Trismegistus) Hermes (Thrice-Great) by the ancient Greeks,7 is reportedly the earlier source of phrases normally ascribed to God in the Old Testament. The teachings of Thoth are said to be contained within 42 volumes handed down through time. This knowledge may be the source of ancient wisdom eventually recognized as the underground Mystery Schools of our ancient past.
It is possible that the Egyptian culture initially flourished somewhere else. As we uncover our past, we discover the remnants of three ancient civilizations laced with surprising commonalities: Egypt, with the Great Pyramid as the center of the ancient world; South America, characterized by the “recent” Incan culture; and Central America, characterized by the “recent” Aztec and Mayan cultures.8 These three cultural centers arose somewhat simultaneously and contain substantial similarities, which are revealed by a modern study of their ruins and mythologies.
Is it possible that what was perceived as the lore of Atlantis, in its demise (overcome by the melting of the ice caps and Noah’s flood as reported in the Old Testament and elsewhere?) spawned the colonies of Egypt and Central and South America on higher ground? Modern research suggests this may not be as far-fetched as it sounds.9
Clearly, Egypt, the most studied of the three ancient civilizations, was powered by a vast wealth of knowledge and insight and operated in far more resonance with its surroundings than we are able to imagine today. After all, the sophistication of the Great Pyramid and its secrets are no accident, though irrevocably complex. Simply the size of the Great Pyramid and its perfect alignment to true north long before the invention of the compass, or its perfectly laid, white limestone outer covering, gives one pause. Among many unexplained features, the Great Pyramid contains several “sighting” shafts, each capped at both ends by solid rock, unknown to the seeing eye, but suggestively pointing to star systems representative of the Egyptians’ ancient beliefs in the cosmos. There are numerous ancient Egyptian sites that modern logic fails to comprehend in size and scope, while others lie undiscovered awaiting our refined perceptual gaze.
Perhaps we have come and gone a number of times. Possibly we have been unable to maintain our connection with Innate Intelligence in step with our advancing technology and eventually lost sight of our connection. Or maybe over the years we simply forgot what we knew. Perhaps we continue in a decline that has roots far deeper than we can fathom. Maybe we are just a blip on the screen of time of again slowly rising intellect. Or possibly we will again grow more powerful than we grow wise.
The existence of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, translated as the Book of Great Awakening, and sometimes translated as the Book of the Mistress of the Hidden Temple,10 has no known earliest age. According to Sir E. A. Wallis Budge,11 possibly the foremost Egyptologist and translator of the Book of the Dead, the earliest known depictions are copies of earlier versions sourced far into antiquity for which no physical records exist.12
The Book of the Dead, commonly thought to be funerary rites, contains far more. The contents, attributed to Thoth, depict the trials and tribulations of initiates attempting to traverse the full realization of the essential divine nature of man and the recovery of the full knowledge and powers of his divine spiritual nature.13 This very sophisticated knowledge, unlike cave-painting or simplistic carvings that grew into more, was an existing language of record and outpouring of knowledge, for which we have almost no understanding of its origin. Apparently, the information contained within the Book of the Dead came from an earlier time and place.
It is interesting to note that many of the stories, laws and wisdom depicted in the Old Testament are earlier recorded in the Book of the Dead. The Ten Commandments, known to have been delivered “from the hand of God” to Moses in around 1500 B.C., were far earlier referenced in the Egyptian Book of the Dead (Chapter CXXV),14 as was a recounting of Noah’s flood. Interestingly, the phrase “In the beginning was the Word,” normally attributed to the Book of John, was far earlier recorded as the words of Thoth recorded in the Book of the Dead.15 Apparently, stories and wisdom recorded in the Old Testament are rehashes of earlier times, echoing stories and myths of our ancient past.
It is apparent that the Old Testament is a recycling of the myths of antiquity as best could be done at the time. There was no way to know the lineage of stories recounted, other than to say that the authors had minimal perspective of a far earlier time. It was legend, dutifully recorded by the eyes and ears of a time that little understood its roots. Humanity was far older than it had eyes to see, and we are just beginning to glimpse.
It is from this earlier time that the long line of Mystery Schools and ancient teachings provided for the enlightenment of historical and biblical figures in our written history. After all, only approximately seven of the 33 years of the life of Jesus are known. Only in his last three or four years is he suddenly documented as having vast insight and knowledge, holding large audiences spellbound and overwhelming the leadership of his time. What he knew and taught had been on the planet for quite some time, carefully protected by the ancient Mystery Schools of Egypt and elsewhere. Though Jesus taught foundational ideas about our true divinity, it was information from an earlier time.
Many of the scholars, scientists and seekers of our past acquired their insights by the revelation of knowledge and tradition from an earlier time. Copernicus, Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Sir Walter Raleigh, Christopher Columbus, Shakespeare and many others, having heard the whisperings of ancient knowledge, had the courage to investigate for themselves at odds with the power and forces that held humanity in sway. The Knights Templar of the 12th century educated in the knowledge found within the ancient catacombs of the ruins of Solomon’s temple complex, began the most spectacular developments in architecture of the time, known today as the Gothic cathedrals of Europe. This came as a result of their study of ancient texts handed down to Solomon that included mathematics, astronomy, astrology, sacred geometry, etc.
In the 12th century, a very powerful French Christian figure, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux,16 defined God as “length, width, height and depth.” Sacred geometry, as it is presently known, is a vehicle for passing knowledge from our far distant past throughout history to our present time. Sacred geometry, as mathematical formulas, defines nature, beauty, harmony and balance.
The European Renaissance of the 14th through 16th centuries was a blossoming of the underground and Mystery School teachings after a 1,000-year reign of ignorance (known as the Dark Ages) brought about, in part, by the destruction of the 700-year-old Library of Alexandra and a systematic obliteration of Pagan leadership and knowledge by fanatical Christianity.17 As the resonance and harmonics of nature’s beauty and order began to find a willing audience, eventually the Space Age and information and technology revolutions became the result.
Humanity has likely risen and fallen a number of times.
The Procession of the Equinox
Ancient humanity thrived in math, science and astronomy much farther back than modern theology and science is able to understand. Evidence lies in the existence of ancient maps showing a round planet when the world was long-believed (forgotten?) to have been flat. The famous, though relatively unknown Piri Reis Map of 1513 A.D.18 is a compilation of earlier maps showing Antarctica with mountain ranges, rivers and no ice cap, and only recently (1950s) proven to be a true and accurate rendition. Among the more interesting ancient secrets to appear before our modern gaze is the realization that the ancients mapped astronomical events of 26,000-year cycles and otherwise mapped and understood the cosmos at unparalleled levels of sophistication long, long ago.
A cyclical and repeatable mapping of time encompassing a 26,000-year cycle, known by numerous ancient cultures with corresponding mathematics, is mind-boggling, to say the least. That ancient humanity, had not only an awareness of a very fine wobble in the earth’s axis, but mapped this anomaly with precision and the use of the zodiac, is a very special discovery about our past indeed!
Stonehenge and other ancient astrological observatories on the planet’s surface are recognized as measuring and reference points for studying this celestial time frame. Knowledge that the world is round probably has come and gone a number of times. After all, it was only 500 years ago that Christopher Columbus sailed beyond what was perceived as a flat horizon. We are not as old as we think, or we are far older than we think. Another way to phrase it might be: “How many times have we attempted to sail beyond our limitations?”
There is substantial evidence for a mathematical interpretation of the “procession of the equinox,” as it is presently called, sewn into and repeated throughout a broad range of ancient myths and legends, which modern day researchers are just beginning to recognize.19 To realize that ancient civilizations could chart such a sophisticated scientific event and “export” this information as legend and myth is not what we expect from our “dim-witted and pagan” forbearers.
For the most part, modern recorded history does not go beyond 1700 or 1800 B.C., or earlier than the time of Abraham and Moses, and the beginnings of Judaism. As a timeline,20 Adam and Eve existed in approximately 4000 B.C.; Egypt’s Great Pyramid was supposedly built no earlier than 2500 B.C.; the time of Abraham was about 1800 B.C.; Moses lived around 1450 B.C.; Buddha lived in approximately 500 B.C. in the lineage of the ancient Hindu faith; Jesus lived in approximately the year “0,” the point from which Christianity sprang; and Mohammad lived approximately 600 A.D. as the source of Islam.
According to Christianity, the beginning of modern civilization coincides with the receding of Noah’s flood, in approximately 2400 B.C. While in the modern perspective of things, Egypt’s Sphinx is, by the most recent estimates, at least 7,000 to 9,000 years old, and Noah’s flood might be estimated at about 11,000 to 13,000 years ago.21 It is likely that Noah’s flood is tied to the most recent melting of the ice caps.
On the scale of one 26,000 year cycle, not much of our history is known, though the calendar and ancient mapping of time are no doubt. More than 4,400 (2400 B.C.) years ago, civilization was considered to be unsophisticated and incapable of the insight and advanced mathematics that we are discovering interwoven as legend and myth in our ancient past. As we become aware of the anomalies of our history, we realize that we take a great deal for granted about our history as a species. We are discovering ancient knowledge that defies everything we think we know about ourselves. It is possible that we were far more “plugged in” than we know.
An Ancient Time Map?
For those unfamiliar with the procession of the equinox, our planet has a slight wobble in its north/south spin axis, in addition to its daily spin (and tilt creating our seasons) in its annual circumnavigation around the Sun. This slow and almost imperceptible wobble, similarly found with a spinning top, makes a complete cycle (wobble) in approximately 25,800 years. Presently the North Pole axis points directly at what is called the North Star or Polaris. But over this 25,800-year cycle, the North Pole axis swings in a very slow circle, sometimes to a different “pole” star and sometimes at none, but ultimately making its way back to a beginning point, and hence a cycle. Apparently, the ancients were also aware of the central point within the celestial circle identified by this wobble.
Furthermore, the ancients, with their awareness of the procession of the equinox, established the equivalent of a 12-month calendar, though the “months” were actually approximately 2,100 years each, for which the Piscean Age and Aquarian Age represent two of these “months,” “seasons” or “ages.” Stonehenge, as well as other numerous ancient astrological observatories, mapped these events, though we can only speculate as to their full intent. We do know they were able to measure and sight the sunrise at the Spring Equinox, undoubtedly representing insights into the ancient sciences of resonance, polarity, and time.
The set of stars (constellation of the zodiac) sighted in the background of the Spring Equinox sunrise told the ancients what zodiacal sign (cosmic month) they were in, which is still true today. We are presently in the Piscean Age of 2,100 years, and soon to enter the Aquarian Age, another age of approximately 2,100 years. Some suggest that we entered the Aquarian Age at the time of Sputnik and the beginnings of the space race in the 1960s. We are presently unaware of the finest details of when an age actually begins or ends. Either way, we are at the cusp of a new age22 as identifi ed by very ancient mathematics and knowledge brought forward as myth and legend.
The zodiac’s 12 signs, as a narrow belt of constellations around our planet, create the backdrop for a calendar of 12 “ages.” Without going into great detail – other than referencing the research of Graham Hancock, Robert Baval, John Anthony West, and many others – there is substantial evidence that The Sphinx, the Great Pyramid, Anghor Wat and Anghor Tom in Cambodia and others, clearly “set in stone” the date of 10,500 B.C. or 12,500 ago, as a significant date in our ancient past. Though some believe it relates to a milestone date within an ancient culture, it is my thought that the date represents the equivalent of January 1 of a 26,000-year calendar. According to this, it appears that we are coming up on the mid-point of this 26,000-year cycle within the next several hundred years.
Presently, we have little understanding of the purpose of a 26,000-year calendar. It is possible that a calendar of this magnitude gives insight into “seasonal” or cyclical comets, asteroids, ice ages and floods, or other cyclical, return events of proportion beyond our present understanding.23 The insight of a 26,000-year calendar may become a foundational map or game board by which we are able to view what has been unviewable without perspective. Undoubtedly, a calendar and mapping of time of this proportion gives us new and additional insights about our past, and, likely, our future.
As the ancient art of astrology reveals itself to map the energetics of Universal Forces and polarity and resonance, we discover that the ancients understood its interaction with cosmic influences to a very fine degree. Today, as yesterday, we learn to merge our relationships with Innate Intelligence, and our connection with Universal Forces grows.
The ancients, who have been broadly assumed to be “dumber than a bag of hammers,” to borrow a term from Ulysses Everett McGill,24 has no merit. Ancient “pagan” humanity, prior to Christianity, probably enjoyed a far healthier and successful relationship with nature and “God” that we presently exhibit or understand.
There is evidence of far more order and knowledge in our distant past than we have been able or willing to accept as fact. According to modern science and quantum physics, it is becoming apparent that God is “everywhere,” an idea we should consider looking into. A system of success that with, little review, has been attributed to a single, man-like god endowed with omnipotence and power over life and death, and,
